On 13 and 14 September 2023, the Policy Learning Platform is hosting a peer review together with the City of Magdeburg on the topic of governance and digitalisation of cultural heritage

The City of Magdeburg developed an overall vision (masterplan) for its fortified cultural heritage and involved different stakeholder groups in its implementation. Current responsibilities for fortified cultural heritage are scattered across different departments such as:

  • The City Administration
  • The Federal States
  • Private owners
  • Associations

This means that current responsibilities for fortified cultural heritage are scattered across different departments of the City Administration, the Federal States, private owners, and associations.

For this reason, the city has requested a peer review in order to address the following challenges:

  • Design a governance model that provides structure and coordination and that defines the roles and responsibilities at macro and micro levels of the public and private stakeholders taking part in the implementation of the vision for fortified heritage.
  • Explore the potential of digitalisation of Magdeburg’s fortified heritage, which is currently underexploited. The City wants to make better use of digital tools to help reconstruct lost heritage to increase visibility and to attract and better guide visitors exploring the local heritage.

The event is by invite only. The key learnings and the follow-up report will be shared afterward.
