PROXIMITIES presented to Southern Regional Assembly Members

At the December meeting of the Southern Regional Assembly, held at Assembly House, Waterford City, members were introduced to the PROXIMITIES project.The Assembly, representing 34 councillors appointed by local authorities across the Southern Region, welcomed insights into how the project will support regional urban planning goals.

Project Overview and Objectives
Áine Whelan, EU Projects Officer, provided an introduction to the PROXIMITIES project, highlighting its focus on sustainable connections, quality public spaces, and community livability in peripheral urban areas. -
Supporting Regional and National Policies
Brigh Ryan, Regional Planning Officer, explained how PROXIMITIES aligns with the Southern Region’s Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy (RSES), specifically supporting Compact Growth as outlined in national policy. -
Examining Peripheral Urban Areas and Tools
Kevin Twomey, Executive Planner, presented the three case study areas in the Southern Region:- North Kilbarry/Blackpool in Cork City,
- Raheen/Dooradoyle in Limerick City,
- Ferrybank in Waterford City.
Kevin also introduced the Proximity Landscape Assessment Tool being developed in partnership with Advisory Partner Erasmus Centre for Urban, Port and Transport Economics at the University of Rotterdam. The tool will enable regional stakeholders to assess and improve accessibility, connections, and urban quality in peripheral areas.

The presentation concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where Assembly Members discussed the potential of PROXIMITIES to drive sustainable regional growth, improve policy instruments, and foster innovation across urban peripheries.
As a critical project for the Southern Region, PROXIMITIES will continue to engage local and regional stakeholders, facilitating learning and policy improvements to create thriving peripheral urban areas.
