About this good practice
Internet of things and digital technologies are radically changing the agrofood sector -a strategically relevant economic sector for most European regions-. Even though innovation potential exploitation that ICTs offer can lead to new innovative products development and increased competitiveness, they can have disruptive effects on current practices and habits of agrofood value chain actors. The S3 Agrofood platform, creates a cooperative ecosystem that establishes leadership of innovation and new products development, linked to big data exploitation, optimizing the whole value chain. It supports the transition process of regional agro food sector to a new form of building networks and synergies between multi-actors to increase competitiveness and job creation.
Implementation steps:
Step 1: Identify emerging technologies for traceability and big data in the agro-food sector on new products development.
Step 2: Technologies supporting traceability and Big Data in the Agro-Food Sector and definition of main thematic areas of egions with RIS3 priorities in AgroFood, Big Data and Traceability
Step3: Engage relative stakeholders implement in businesses, evaluate and optimize the approach.
The leading regions to set up, update and operate the platform are regions of Andalucia and Emiglia Romana, beneficiaries are European regions (members) and stakeholders are industry, research entities, policy makers, innovation brokers, NGOs (associated members) in an open procedure.

Resources needed
For SMEs to learn about big data and traceability the cost is very low (man hours devoted), while the use of the practice by regional authorities and SMEs' supporting entities can scale up to 10.000 euros depending on staff and expertise involved, update of the application, dissemination campaign.
Evidence of success
Even though the good practice is still on going there is evidence that is successful. JRC adopted S3 platform and 18 regions are working in the platform, sharing thematic priorities, tools and participation in joint projects. Each region provides, priorities, existing tools, innovative SMEs and consumer needs creating a pool that allows convergence of efforts in increasing competitiveness of European agro food sector at global markets. Smart specialization for Regions, SMEs, consumers.
Potential for learning or transfer
Management and exploitation of data and traceability potential is a critical factor for an innovative, competitive and sustainable agro food production in European regions. Accelerating adoption of ICT, improved data management and interoperability of agrofood industries leads to developing new business models, seizing market opportunities, creation of innovative products and quality jobs. The platform is easy to use and requires only (maximum)10.000,00 € to be spend once at regional level. The required strong commitment on terrorial cooperation as basis for the transfer of technology is present in most regions with all key stakeholders have taken such decisions (18 regions already adopted the platform). Each region maps its special needs and capabilities and contribute an assessment of the priorities and challenges faced in the agro food value chain, select mature sub sectors and leading companies, activities already done in Smart Specialization Strategies.
