This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
Companies from each sector must create a waste management concept for each site, which employs more than 20 employees. The concept must be updated at least every seven years. This is checked by the competent authorities. EMAS registered companies are not obliged to deliver a waste management concept if they are publishing an environmental statement with the relevant Information.
Resources needed
There are low technical efforts as EMAS organisations already fulfil more than the waste management law defines. As the Austrian Federal Ministry of Sustainabilty and Tourism is in charge of EMAS and the waste management law, it was not difficult to incorporate it.
Evidence of success
EMAS organisations, especially bigger companies, welcome this regulatory relief as it saves them money. Also the competent authorities welcome the relief of their control duty in case of EMAS organisations. This would be a true regulatory relief for both parties, a win-win situation. The authorities do not have to Report in which form the waste Management concept was reported, thus there is no final number. The benefits of this relief were collected during several stakeholder Meetings.
Potential for learning or transfer
It is easy to integrate the relevant waste management concept information into the environmental statement. Thus, the organisations save time and money. Also competent authorities do not have to check this area, as the environmental auditor has already checked it. This would be a true regulatory relief for both parties, a win-win situation.
