Peer review

On May 15–16, 2025, the Bucharest-Ilfov Regional Development Agency (BI RDA), together with regional stakeholders from two Bucharest-based research institutes—The National Institute for Research and Development in Chemistry and Petrochemistry, and The National Institute of Materials Physics—participated in a peer review visit in Frederikshavn, Denmark. The aim: to exchange best practices in circular economy and waste recovery.

Hosted by the Municipality of Frederikshavn and Erhvervshus Nord, the delegation visited key companies in the recycling and resource recovery sector:

  • Ravnshøj Resource Center – advanced sorting and recycling systems

  • STENA Recycling – metal waste transformed into high-quality raw materials

  • Gemidan – food waste converted into energy and bio-fertilizers

  • Skagen Circle – wastewater from the fishing industry turned into energy and valuable by-products

Key Insights:
✅ Danish models demonstrate how technology and policy can drive effective circular practices
✅ Innovation in sorting, data analytics, and quality control enhances both efficiency and economic viability
✅ Industrial symbiosis and nutrient recovery contribute to sustainable agriculture and environmental protection
✅ Collaboration, supportive policy frameworks, and public trust are crucial to circular systems

The visit underlined the strong potential for implementing circular economy principles at the regional level through the integration of modern technologies, strategic partnerships, and industrial symbiosis.

As fellow RAW4RES partners, BI RDA extend their sincere thanks to Frederikshavn Municipality for their exceptional hospitality and for sharing their valuable expertise.
