Remobil
About this good practice
The REMOBIL project is a non-profit project to collect old mobile phones. It is intended for all types of entities, including citizens, and operates throughout the Czech Republic. The main goal is to change the situation where phones are accumulating in households and are thus an environmental problem. Remobil tries to offer the easiest possible way to get rid of unwanted phones.
It also contributes 10 CZK from each mobile phone collected to charity and recycling of mobile phones help to reuse raw materials. As a result, this means significant water savings, a reduction in the production of toxic waste or a reduction in the production of CO2 equivalents.
This project is supported by important companies on the Czech e-waste market, for example Asekol a.s. or Ecobat s.r.o. The support has also from City of Prague and delivery service Zásilkovna s.r.o.
This project also involve people with disabilities and people disadvantaged in the labour market in the labour process. They are employed by specialist companies that are involved in the process of dismantling mobiles and accessories, where they are required to adhere to strict quality standards.
The collection of mobile phones takes place in companies or schools as part of announced campaigns, where collection boxes are installed for the collection of mobile phones. Another option is to use the free delivery service Zásilkovna. If you have 10 or more unnecessary mobile phones, you can order a transport by courier directly.
Resources needed
Remobil is a Non-profit organisation where over 1,300 different entities have already joined the project such as SMEs, schools, libraries, cities, municipalities and citizens.
Project was granted by the Prague City Hall with the amount of 8.000 EUR for the development of new collection containers.
Evidence of success
One hundred grams is the average weight of a mobile phone. By recycling it, we save a thousand times more raw materials needed for its production. There are around 12 million of these waste mobiles in the Czech Republic.
One mobile phone saves 36.8 litres of water, 2.63 kg of CO2 and 1 kg of oil. Furthermore, for example the production of toxic or carcinogenic substances (287 g of 1,4-dichlorobenzene equivalent/mobile) will be reduced.
Since 2017, Remobil donated CZK 685.560 to charity.
