Trifoi Fest

About this good practice
Waste generation and unsustainable consumption are major issues in Romania, worsened by a lack of awareness and practical alternatives. Traditional festivals create waste through single-use products and unsustainable practices, harming the environment. There is a need to promote sustainable consumption and create events that minimize waste while showcasing eco-friendly alternatives.
In response, Asociatia pentru Consum Sustenabil organizes Trifoi Fest, an event meant to raise awareness about sustainable consumption, waste reduction and eco-friendly lifestyles. The Festival provides a platform for individuals and families to learn about sustainability, engage in activities and explore local green businesses. Trifoi Fest includes workshops, panels and activities on waste reduction, recycling, upcycling, sustainable food and eco-friendly fashion. Participants are encouraged to bring reusable items, thus the single-use plastics are avoided.
Key activities include:
- Green markets with organic food, eco-friendly home goods and ethical fashion.
- Waste reduction challenges to practice learned sustainability.
- Educational performances and exhibitions on consumer choices' environmental impact.
Trifoi Fest is open to the public, attracting families, students and environmentally conscious individuals, promoting responsible consumption in local communities.
Main stakeholders: Local community, green businesses, educational institutions, sustainability organizations and artisans.

Evidence of success
Trifoi Fest has successfully gathered over 3,000 participants and has led to the promotion of over 100 local green businesses, contributing to the adoption of sustainable practices by many households in the area. Participants have reported making lasting changes, such as reducing waste, choosing sustainable products and supporting local eco-friendly businesses. Moreover, the event has had positive environmental impacts by reducing the waste typically generated at large festivals.
Potential for learning or transfer
The Trifoi Fest model can be replicated in other European regions or countries thanks to its adaptable structure. The key to its success lies in community engagement, hands-on activities and collaboration with local businesses and stakeholders. It can be particularly beneficial for other regions with a growing interest in sustainability, where the culture of responsible consumption is still emerging. Several local environmental organizations have already shown interest in adapting the festival concept for other cities in Romania and the neighboring regions.
