Recycling - Let's clean up the world

About this good practice
The aim of the project is to deepen the knowledge of students in the field of e-waste prevention, sorting and recycling to give them personal experience with the take-back of batteries and small electrical equipment.
The project is open to all kindergartens, primary and secondary schools in the Czech Republic and participation is free of charge.
Recycling develops children's relationship with the environment through thematic games, practical activities, quizzes and small projects, but also through children's direct participation in the collection of the e-waste.
In addition, Recyclohraní already offers to teachers 8 parts of a special EKOABECEDA teaching kit, which will make it easier to integrate the topic of waste prevention, recycling and take-back into the school curriculum. Each kit contains a lecturer's guide and lesson scenarios for both Grade I and II, including worksheets and teaching aids. The sections on waste prevention, water conservation and climate change also include scenarios for use in kindergartens and for secondary school students.
The Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic took over the patronage of the programme in 2008. The programme is co-financed by companies specialising in take-back and recycling in the Czech Republic, namely ECOBAT s.r.o. (battery take-back) and ELEKTROWIN a.s. (electrical equipment take-back).
In 2023, 3,897 kindergartens, primary or secondary schools were already involved in the School Recycling Education Programme.
Resources needed
Program is supported by Norway Grants, State Environmental Fund of Czech Republic, Asekol a.s., The city of Prague, Hradec Králové region, Central Bohemia region and Moravian-Silesian Region.
Evidence of success
In 2023, 3,897 kindergartens, primary or secondary schools were already involved in the School Recycling Education Programme.
During the lifetime of the programme were collected 127 tons of small e-waste, 104,5 tons of used batteries and 19 290 mobile phones were sent for recycling.
Potential for learning or transfer
As part of the education programme, pupils gain an understanding of e-waste management or waste collection. During the campaigns students have an opportunity to actively participate and follow the e-waste collection process.
The collection of the e-waste takes place in the form of a competition, where Recyklohraní tries to increase the interest of schools to collect a lot of points as much as possible usually during one year campaign. Three best schools are awarded by the initiatives.
