About this good practice
Suceava Municipality realised an audit in 2014 of its public lighting system. Studies showed that a modernisation of the public lighting system was needed to be more efficient and save more energy. Suceava Municipality started a project in 2015 to replace the 9221 lighting units located into 18 educational units (schools , kindergartens and high schools ) with LED units . This project is financed through Swiss Romanian Cooperation Programme with a total amount of 2.343.260 Euro and it will be implemented till September 2019.
Using the telemanagement system of public lighting allow:
- other reductions in electricity consumption by programmed reduction of the luminous intensity in set intervals (e.g. 2-5 a.m.) to 75% of the maximum operating intensity.
- real-time identification of non-functional luminaries and implicitly correction of nonconformities.

Evidence of success
Electricity consumption savings the first two years after installation of the system:
Year 1 = 2.013,15 Mwh
Year 2 = 2.438,59 Mwh
Total electricity consumption savings the first two years : 4.451,74 Mwh
Electricity savings (RON) 2018 vs 2016 : 1.550.238,17 RON
Reduction of CO2 emissions calculated for the first two years: 4.451.740 Kw/h x 287,11 g CO2/Kwh = 1.278.139,07 g CO2 ( 1,278 t CO2 ).

Potential for learning or transfer
Using LED systems for public lighting means:
- Significant reduction of energy consumption
- Reduction of CO2 emissions
- Improved quality of the life into the city
- Local development of new technologies (also into the private sector)
Significant investment is required but it enables quick wins regarding electricity consumption, CO2 emissions savings and comfort feelings of inhabitants.
