Mobile Collection of Hazardous Waste
About this good practice
The introduction of the services was prompted by the need expressed by Gdansk residents for an easier way of disposing of hazardous waste and large-size electro-waste. That is why the city met the residents needs by organising a Mobile Collection of Hazardous Waste service in two formats: OZON A and OZON B, carried out by the municipal company Gdańskie Usługi Komunalne Sp. z o.o. In the case of collection of hazardous waste (OZON A), employees of the municipal company wait for residents at specific times at designated points according to a pre-approved annual schedule, 3 times a year in each location. The collection takes place in convenient locations for both pedestrians and people who drive by car. In the case of collection of large-size electronic waste directly from the resident (OZON B), it is sufficient to make an appointment with the municipal company providing the service and the company will come to the residents address at the appointed time. The company's employees remove the equipment directly from the flats. The first mobile collection of large-size electro-waste (OZON B) from residents took place in 2021. Since the start of this service by the municipal company, the system has been very popular with the city's residents. There is no additional cost to residents who wish to use the Mobile Collection of Dangerous Waste. The service is financed by monthly waste collection and management fees.
Resources needed

The costs of implementing the programme from 2018 (until the end of 2023) amounted to 819,760.32 PLN.
Evidence of success
OZON A collected 13,84 Mg in 2022 and 27,66 Mg of hazardous waste, including electro-waste, in 2023. This illustrates the increase in the amount of waste collected by the mobile point from scheduled locations and the need for this type of service.
From 2021 to date, a total of 454,02 Mg of electro-waste has been collected through OZON B. Approximately 120 Mg of electro-waste is collected in this way annually. This is complete equipment, which is sent in its entirety to the treatment facility.
Potential for learning or transfer
The organisation of the OZON A mobile collection of hazardous waste raises awareness among the city's residents of the proper segregation of hazardous waste. Thanks to this service, this waste doesn't end up in the residual waste stream, but in the hazardous waste stream.
The service of collecting large-size electro-waste from homes, i.e. OZON B, is reaching more and more city residents, as it meets the needs of residents who don't have the possibility to deliver their WEEE to the recycling plant themselves. Residents are more aware of the need to hand over their electro-waste in its totality for professional disassembly at the waste treatment plant.
