Water wise actions start young in Roeselare
As part of the InterRevita project, the City of Roeselare, in partnership with Join for Water, is taking a district-based approach to stimulate climate adaptation in the private domain. By focusing on neighbourhoods, the initiative aims to raise awareness of practical, low-threshold solutions for managing rainwater such as reuse, infiltration and buffering, right where residents live.
The first activities began in the neighbourhood surrounding Kerelsplein, where the city engaged local children through playful and creative workshops. Collaborating with the local school and youth movement, the project introduced water-wise thinking in a hands-on, accessible way.
Children took part in fun and educational games that encouraged them to reflect on their own water use. They also decorated rainwater barrels. It not only sparked creativity but also reinforced the importance of rainwater reuse at home.
By involving the youngest members of the community, Roeselare is planting the seeds of long-term climate awareness and action. These early experiences help children and by extension, their families understand the value of sustainable water management and the small steps they can take on their own properties.
Through these district-level efforts, Roeselare continues to build a water-wise future, one neighbourhood and one generation at a time.
