BIOPRO REGIONS: Official Launch in Guimarães to Promote Sustainable Food Systems Across Europe
The European project BIOPRO REGIONS – Bio & Proximity Products Regions was officially launched in Guimarães, Portugal, on 27–28 May 2025. For the first time, the Intermunicipal Community of Ave (CIM do Ave) is leading a European territorial cooperation initiative, with the goal of promoting sustainability in the agri-food sector through short supply chains, local products, and environmentally friendly practices.
Funded by the Interreg Europe programme, the project brings together eight partners from seven European countries (Cyprus, France, Sweden, Hungary, Lithuania, North Macedonia, and Serbia). The kick-off event included strategic planning sessions, study visits to local initiatives (such as “A Leira Dela” and “Hortas do Minho”), and culinary experiences showcasing the region’s commitment to sustainable gastronomy.

The project aligns with the European Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy, aiming to support regional public policies that encourage organic farming, circular economy principles, and local economic resilience.

The next steps will involve the development of a shared methodology and regional action plans, enabling the exchange of good practices and policy improvements tailored to the specific contexts of each participating region.

According to Marta Coutada, First Secretary of CIM do Ave, “this is more than the start of a European project — it is a firm commitment to the future of our regions and the planet, through the promotion of local value chains that support environmental, economic, and social sustainability.”
