WHRS (Waste Heat Recovery System)

About this good practice
WHRS (Waste Heat Recovery System) uses the surplus heat from the clinker cooking line at the COLACEM S.p.A Sesto Campano (MOLISE- Italy) production facility for the production of electricity for self-consumption, giving it to an innovative ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) turbine system with which it will be able to produce from 2 to 3 MW of electricity.
The project involves 3 companies: ENEL X (Energy sector and a strategy aimed at innovation, sustainability and digitalization) COLACEM S.p.A. (production of cement ) COGENIO (Energy-efficiency service platform).
WHRS system is a project which provides both economical and environmental benefits: the companies involved obtain white certificates (which are a contribution to the investment) and Colacem will be able to purchase electricity at a lower price than the market one; heat emissions are reduced, contributing to the challenge to reduce global warming and the use of fossil fuels is reduced for the portion of electricity production recovered thanks to the WHRS plant.
During 2021 the preliminary planning was completed and the procedure for obtaining Energy Efficiency Qualification (TEE - White Certificates ) was presented and approved by GSE (Energy Services Management).
The TEEs are issued by the GSE annually based on the energy savings achieved. To obtain the White Certificates there must be a tangible result in terms of energy and they have a duration of 10 year.
Resources needed
NATIONAL PUBLIC FUNDING: 10 M/€ release of Energy Efficiency Qualification (TEE) White Certificates.
Evidence of success
WHRS is in a preliminary phase.
Enel X has obtained approval of the practice: this indicates that the results are likely to be positive.
Even after the period of allocation of the TEE, i.e. 10 years, the system will continue to produce energy at a cost lower than the market one, as well as maintaining the environmental advantages already highlighted.
Potential for learning or transfer
WHRS has a hight Environmental and Economic impact and it respects the principles pointed out in the Green Deel and in the Circular Economy Action Plan.
