Rehabilitation of an abandoned quarry in the Region of Attica

About this good practice
Construction, excavation and demolition waste are actually secondary material which can be reused and produce new material. The remaimings can be further used for the rehabilitation of abandonned quaerries. This practice is the first one in Greece that started this procedure and is used from every public body that has to rehabilitate quarries.
The good practice gave solution to two main problems:
a. A legal and environmentally accepted method for the management of the construction, building and demolition waste, left after the initial process of the waste and the reuse of the available material
b. Rehabilitation of abandoned quarries with construction, building and demolition waste and land use adjustment.
In order this practice to work participation of different actors must create an industrial symbiosis system. In this case, 2 public administration bodies, 3 alternative management systems for demolition, excavation and construction waste 22 enterprises that process demolition, excavation and construction waste and 1 enterprise specialist on quarries rehabilitation are working together so as to rehabilitate an abandoned quaery according to environmental and cyrcular economy practices. The main resources needed are personel, at least 6 technical and engineering personel are required, heavy construction machinery and the necessary construction and rehabilitation studies.
Resources needed
Annual cost is estimated at 200.000,00 euro. The good practice was funded primarily through private funds. The alternative management systems responsible for the rehabilitation set a specific fee/ton of waste for the accepted waste.
Evidence of success
The good practice has high environmental and economic impact. It is replicated and in other Greek regions (Region of Kozani is included), is economically viable, industrial symbiosis and co-operation among different parties is promoted and environmental and circular targets are achieved. More than 100.000 tones of construction, excavation and demolition waste annually are used in order to rehabilitate the quaerry.
Potential for learning or transfer
The roadmap for creating a symbiosis shceme is presented through this practice. It is a successful example for other bodies who need assistance on achieving the rehabilitation of an area according to environmental and circular economy principles. This practice shows and has clarified the road and the procedures needed for replicated in other areas. It has been great help for the Greek Local Goverements in order to start similar activities in their areas and give solutions both to waste managment and protection of the environment.
