Innovation (R&D) company grant scheme of Flanders Innovation and Enterprise
About this good practice
The support framework managed by Flanders Enterprise and innovation agency (AIO) also provides an extra financial incentive to Flanders‘ companies: above the basic percentages for R&D funding, extra support of 10% is given when the company cooperates with a non-affiliated company abroad for developing its innovative processes, products and services.
Witin this R&D support framework, Flanders’ based companies can benefit from grants for international cooperation through participation in joint calls of international networks, where Flanders Enterprise and Innovation AIO is member in. Company partners abroad do not receive grants from AIO but from their respective regional agency in network following virtual common pot.
Expert opinion
This practice, like similar types of grant schemes, offers support to companies at different stages of the innovation process. However, it noticeably also puts focus on the internationalisation aspects of R&D. In addition to cross-border cooperation being eligible to receive support, there is also the incentive of extra funding if a company pursues international cooperation. This approach to promoting internationalisation among regional businesses can be a source of inspiration to other regional innovation agencies. The potential for successful transfer of course varies with the receiving region; a strong regional profile and well-developed international network for companies to benefit from are contributing factors. Secondly, the scope and scale of a grant scheme is determined by the available budget.

The companies can get advice from the innovation agency before the application process (knowledge partners to be involved) in a meeting with thematic NCPs and with company advisors specialized in a variety of application sectors.
