Exibo -method of exhibition design to be used in large events with a limited environmental footprint

About this good practice
The motto of this research is: “Designing for all” in order to develop an innovative method of exhibition design that can be used in large events with a limited footprint of the environment. Exibo is the development of a design methodology of a modular exhibition system based on the "archetype" production process of recording, analyzing, and reconstituting data. It is a three-dimensional holistic exhibition system, consisting of skeleton (load bearing system), skins (covering elements) and add‐ons (furniture). Through repetition, expansion and sequence of a uniquely defined geometric element that can be used in large events, it is possible to create spaces for the presentation of all types of content, such as ideas, values, memory and products, generally understood as “experience spaces”.
The key point was to redefine the Ontology of a modular exhibit system, so that it could be afterwards easier to define what we are searching for.
The vision was how to describe and define the elements of a "universal" language in exhibit design with sustainable characteristics. Exibo’s main structure-body is made out of thin aluminum.
Resources needed
Polyptychon had to enlarge the existing team of architects, engineers and designers by hiring external experts such as a structural engineer, a lighting specialist and a material scientist.
As Exibo was the result of a research programme, it proved financially stable, with no unwanted surprises.
Evidence of success
The waste produced by the “cuttings” is 0,2-2,0%, as a lot of this “waste” could be used for add‐on elements or supporting structures for skins. The multiply reuse of the system decreased the cost of production, transportation, installation and dismantling, up to 50% for the first reuse. Installation to 70% for the second reuse.
Organisations that have replicated the practice:
Polycentric museum of Aigai
Archaeological museum of Kilkis
State theatre of northern Greece
Potential for learning or transfer
The practise of exibo can be easily transferred in other regions and other countries, as it has been specifically designed to fit in different spaces and to be formulated according to the topic of each event.
A sustainable self‐standing and self‐ luminous modular exhibit system with unprecedented flexibility for the user who wants to minimise the process of "customisation" in exhibit design, and consequently design wastes.
