This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
In recent years DIMA started a cooperation with Ferrovie dello Stato. In 2019-2020 a research activity with Reti Ferroviarie Italiane allowed to develop appropriate tools and analysis on the deployment of Rail Hydrogen Refuelling Stations, including also renewable hydrogen production. Trustable design and asset management guidelines were developed and released together with electronic tools for evaluating costs and return of investments, thus supporting the RFI capabilities in the deployment of such infrastructures.
Resources needed
One Associate Professor, one Assistant Professor, two Post Docs, 2 Ph.D. students and a number of M.Sc. candidates. All participants devoted 33% of their research time to this activity. The Associate Professor devoted 20%.
Evidence of success
1 Contracts with Ferrovie dello Stato Group (40 k€ in total).

Potential for learning or transfer
The knowledges developed on rail HRS are currently used by RFI for designing new strategies for hydrogen trains to be deployed on not-electrified lines (this topic is present in the last version of PNRR-Italian application of Next Generation EU).
