The coworking space “Skola6” in Cēsis, Latvia, was established by repurposing a former vocational school to meet the demand for creative industry space. Initiated by Cēsis Municipality, the project began with a two-week trial that attracted significant local interest and shaped the “Skola6” concept. The goal was to create studios for creatives, freelancers, and provide support services for entrepreneurs. Renovations were achieved with volunteer help, while promotional activities, such as business competitions and rent subsidies, boosted engagement. Within two years, 90% of studios were occupied. With €24,000 in annual municipal funding for operating costs, “Skola6” exemplifies citizen and stakeholder engagement in retrofitting spaces to foster the local creative industry sustainably.
