About this good practice
Free Neighborhood Trailer for Residents of Tilburg-West
Residents of Tilburg-West can borrow a trailer completely free of charge. Whether you need to move house, pick up large items, or take waste to the landfill, this trailer is here to help.
This initiative is run by local residents in collaboration with the social organization Wij-West. The trailer is available for all kinds of practical uses, such as:
Disposing of large amounts of waste
Picking up bulky second-hand items like furniture or appliances
Helping with a move
The trailer is very popular and is in use most of the time. It offers residents more freedom and flexibility in their daily lives.
A practical example:
A family’s refrigerator breaks down. They only have a small car and can’t afford to buy a new fridge. Renting a van or trailer to pick up a second-hand fridge would also be too expensive. Thanks to the neighborhood trailer, they can pick up a used fridge and dispose of the broken one—without financial strain.
More than just a trailer
This initiative also strengthens social ties in the neighborhood. For example, residents who don’t have a car often get a ride from those who do. In this way, the trailer brings people together and contributes to a stronger, more connected community.
Resources needed
Human capital:
Volunteers to take care of the rental process
Volunteers to take care of maintenance
Financial capital:
Funding for buying the trailers
Space:
A garage box to store the trailers
Evidence of success
The first trailer was so popular that a second one was added. Both trailers are rented out most of the time.
Potential for learning or transfer
-There is no 'for profit' motive. Nobody is making money here. This is a neighborhood based initiative. By and for citizens.
-There's a sense of community around the use of the trailer. People give eachother rides to the landfill, help eachother out in different ways. The trailer functions as a catalyst.
- This is a good example of how these initiatives can run based on volunteers and with very limited resources.
