Third CIBUS regional meeting in Bulgaria
The event brought together more than 50 participants, representatives of Ministry of Environment, Directorate Waste Management and MA of Programme Environment, municipal environmental experts, Municipalities and NGOs.
The meeting focused on the factors contributing to food loss/waste across the food chain and use of bio-waste at municipal level. It fostered valuable discussions on strategies to minimize food waste, available funding at municipal level for bio-waste treatment and to understand the challenges across the food production/supply chain in prevention the food waste.
As part of the meeting a visit to the Regional waste treatment center of Harmanli Municipality was organised to get acquainted with the currently applied measures for biowaste treatment through composting and the plans to be upgraded for separate collection and recycling of biodegradable waste. Important conclusion from the discussions is that establishing waste prevention policies are number 1 priority followed by policies to encouraging active citizen participation and constantly apply awareness-raising campaigns.
