Visitor Center for Ecotourism in the Danube region

About this good practice
The town of Lábatlan is located in a wonderful natural setting, nestled between the northern slopes of the Gerecse Mountains and the Danube, but it is not a well-known place among tourists, just like the Gerecse Mountain range itself is a less traveled and discovered natural unit. The town aims to showcase this and stimulate tourism through the construction of the visitor center. In its 4 years of operation, the institution has earned a reputation for Lábatlan among tourist. Individual and group visitors are eager to visit, and it has become a popular excursion destination for school groups, as well as a partner for companies that prioritize sustainability.
Resources needed
The institution was established through a successful application. The investment was carried out with the help of 687 500 euros in European Union grant funding. At least 3 staff members are needed to operate the center, working in shifts due to weekend and holiday opening hours.
Evidence of success
The success of the visitor center also comes from its special educational character, as it teaches the future generation about sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyles in a natural environment. Every year, more than 100 children's groups and nearly 5,000 visitors in total visit the visitor center. The investment also created 3 jobs.
Potential for learning or transfer
The operation of the project can provide good examples of both adapting to constantly changing circumstances and overcoming economic difficulties arising from seasonality. Additionally, the unique educational activities that are inclusive of all types of people are worthy of know-how transfer. With the establishment and successful operation of the visitor center, the previously industry-renowned town has made its way onto the map of nature-loving tourists and entered their sphere of interest.
