A tool for the prevention of cognitive fusion disorders through VR cognitive-motor training

About this good practice
GRYDSEN is an innovative VR therapeutic system supporting seniors in maintaining cognitive and motor functions. It addresses aging challenges such as cognitive slowing and motor limitations and is implemented in medical facilities, care homes, and therapy offices.
The program includes three therapeutic modules in each session:
Cognitive Training: Tasks like memory exercises and pattern recognition improve memory, attention, and executive functions.
Motor Training: Activities such as playing a virtual xylophone enhance coordination, precision, and limb mobility.
Cognitive-Motor Training: Tasks combine movement and cognitive challenges, e.g., preparing a virtual shopping list, engaging memory, attention, and physical activity.
Each session adjusts to the user’s progress with varying difficulty levels. Developed by psychologists, physiotherapists, and health educators, GRYDSEN is scientifically validated and available in Polish, English, French, and German, ensuring versatility.
Clinical trials show its effectiveness in improving cognition, coordination, reflexes, and concentration. Its gamified, intuitive design suits both healthy seniors and those with mild cognitive impairments.
The system allows one therapist to manage up to three stations simultaneously, optimizing costs and resources. It’s ideal for hospitals, care homes, and therapy centers.
Resources needed
System includes a €15,000 VR therapy set with goggles, software, a monitor and chair. Therapists undergo training to ensure safe use and sessions are held in obstacle-free spaces. It’s suitable for hospitals, care homes and clinics, offering technical support and safety guidelines for participants.
Evidence of success
GRYDSEN has won multiple awards, including gold medals at the 2023 China International Invention Exposition, Bangkok Intellectual Property Expo, E-innovate in Bydgoszcz, and Japan Design Expo 2022. Key research includes a pilot study on VR-based cognitive stimulation (Podhorecka et al., 2021, Human Technology), with further studies underway to expand its evidence base.
