About this good practice
One important challenge for R&I infrastructure and capacities in the innovation-driven agri-food sector are connected with lack of cooperation of science and private companies willing to create innovative products or processes in agri-food sector. In many cases there is a lack of successful tools how to encourage this cooperation. Policy makers from different countries are also trying to find measures (from national and EU funds) that would help to increase cooperation between science and private companies in various sectors including agri-food sector.
A good example of cooperation between science and private companies in agrifood sector are activities initiated by JSC “Melyne”. Commercialization of scientific ideas and support for business start-up allowed company with the help of researchers from LAMMC Institute of Horticulture in Lithuania to begin pilot production of new products - natural food dyes from berries, which can be used in food, beverages, cosmetics, etc. Modern technology pooling in a newly opened science, studies and business center "Neman" made it possible for the company to create innovative, niche, functional food product prototypes. JSC "Melyne" is working closely with other innovative companies, seeking to enter the market with new products of unique characteristics. The beneficiaries of this practice are consumers and other innovative private companies that are willing to introduce new products to the market by using components of this initiative.

Potential for learning or transfer
This practice is a good example of cooperation between science and private companies of innovation-driven agri-food sector for policymakers and public institutions in other countries that are responsible for various support measures (from national and the EU funds) supporting cooperation of science and private entities for innovation actions.
This practice demonstrates an example how successful cooperation can be created depending on the needs and type of innovation. This practice also can be a good example for policymakers for learning how cooperation between private companies of agri-food sector and research institutes can be initiated depending on company’s needs, ideas, willingness to cooperate in creation of new innovative products and technologies. It is very important to find researchers or scientists what are open for cooperation and ready for co-creation process.
