PIMAP4Sustainability

About this good practice
The EU has long supported cluster ecosystems through funding aimed at cross-sector collaboration. Networking between clusters, especially across different sectors, is crucial as it enables the access to projects like Euroclusters. This collaborative approach fosters innovation and promotes green and digital transitions. A prime example is the Euroclusters initiative, in which we participated with the PIMAP 4 SUSTAINABILITY project. The project unites six European clusters from photonics, advanced manufacturing technologies, aerospace, and metalworking industries, supporting SMEs by providing financial and training services. This helps them access advanced technologies and fosters international collaboration.
The main stakeholders of this good practice include clusters, their member companies, technology centers, research institutions, and innovation partners. Key benefits are increased resilience of industrial sectors, boosted innovation, and significant contributions to the EU's climate goals for 2050.
Resources needed
This practice requires financial support from EU programs like Euroclusters and active participation from clusters, their members, and other industrial and academic partners to effectively coordinate cross-sectoral and cross-cluster collaborations.
Evidence of success
• PIMAP4Sustainability connects clusters from six countries and sectors, enhancing cross-sectoral innovation.
• Over €500,000 was allocated to SMEs for innovation funding and training programs.
•New value chains were created by linking photonics with industries such as aerospace and metalworking.
• SMEs were supported in their digital and green transitions through access to advanced technologies.
Potential for learning or transfer
EU support for clusters showcases an effective policy that can be transferred to other regions and sectors. Key recommendations include:
• Emphasizing cross-sectoral collaboration and creating value chains.
• Providing targeted funding and training programs tailored to SMEs' needs.
• Establishing platforms for knowledge-sharing and experience exchange between clusters and sectors.
This good practice demonstrates how EU policies can contribute to the resilience and innovation of European industrial ecosystems, serving as an inspiration for other regions and sectors.
