Lough Derg Visitor Experience

About this good practice
• Problem and context: Lough Derg had limited recognition as
a domestic and international tourism destination. The natural
and cultural heritage was underutilized, with minimal
coordination between stakeholders across the Lough Derg
region. This plan aims to address these challenges by
structuring and promoting Lough Derg as a cohesive tourism
destination.
• Implementation: Guided by the V.I.C.E. (Visitor, Industry,
Community, Environment) model, the Lough Derg VEDP
developed initiatives in destination management, innovation,
visitor experiences, and marketing. These actions include the
establishment of destination hubs, enhancement of trails and
Blueway networks, digital marketing campaigns, and local
food promotion.
• Stakeholders and beneficiaries: Managed by Tipperary LCDC,
the project includes partnerships with Fáilte Ireland, Clare
and Galway County Councils, and Waterways Ireland. Local
businesses, community organizations, and visitors to the
region benefit from
Resources needed
Approximately €8.47 million in public funding and €1.7 million from Project Ireland 2040. Human resources included multi-agency coordination, local authority staff, and community stakeholders for project delivery and ongoing management (local councils, Fáilte Ireland, Waterways Ireland, OPW, LDCs).
Evidence of success
Success indicators include Increased visitor numbers, high
domestic tourism growth (66.5% in 2022-2023), and
infrastructure upgrades. Successful digital and branding
initiatives have enhanced Lough Derg's profile, making it a
recognized sustainable tourism destination.
Potential for learning or transfer
Learning potential: The practice demonstrates effective
regional coordination and engagement across multiple
counties and stakeholders. Lessons in environmental
preservation, slow travel promotion, and community
inclusion are applicable for similar regional tourism projects
elsewhere. Transferability is supported by scalable
approaches in trail development, local partnerships, and
digital outreach. The framework could benefit regions aiming
to develop eco-friendly tourism with strong community ties.
