Digital Forestry Platform: Streamlining Access to Forestry Services

About this good practice
The platform was developed to streamline the Objection Examination Process for Forest Maps as part of the ratification of forest land designations in Chania. This need led to the digitalization of several services offered by the Forestry Directorate, evolving into a centralized resource for forestry and environmental information in the region.
It provides citizens with access to relevant data on property-related matters and environmental issues. Users can apply for forestry-related permits and licenses, including timber harvesting, pruning, hunting, and plant distribution from the forest nursery. Citizens can also submit and track correction requests for Forest Maps, monitor the status of objections, and access mapped forest areas at local, regional, and national levels.
The platform offers information on committees, members, and timelines for objection reviews, as well as details on flora, fauna, Natura areas, and special ecosystems. Updates on forest engineering projects, including reservoirs, rural road maintenance, and fire protection zones, are also available. Additionally, users can stay informed about current forestry and environmental legislation.
By integrating these services, the platform serves as a vital resource for residents, environmental organizations, and professionals, enhancing transparency and improving the efficiency of public services.

Evidence of success
Currently, of the four Regional Units of Crete, only the Forestry Directorate of Chania hosts a digital platform. The platform helps in bridging distance and the rural digital divide, as well as improving the productivity of the staff of the Directorate. As of January 2025, the site has hosted over 50,000 visits, including from countries of the EU and beyond (a total of 23 countries). This widespread adoption is a testament to its success and the void in its sector it helped to address.
Potential for learning or transfer
The platform serves as a practical example of how digital tools can enhance access to information, streamline administrative processes, improve engagement with rural communities and on how digital tools can transform service delivery and governance. It offers significant potential for learning and transfer, as it embodies a successful digital transformation initiative and its functionalities and approach can inspire similar efforts in other regions aiming to enhance digital services for rural communities. The platform presents valuable learning opportunities in terms of digital service provision, stakeholder engagement, policy integration, and efficiency improvements. Its transferable aspects can inspire and guide similar initiatives across rural regions, contributing to the broader goal of bridging the digital divide and implementing the Smart Village concept.
