About this good practice
The „Aktív Kalandor” platform is aimed at promoting nature tourism in Hungary. It addresses the challenge that many hikers and nature enthusiasts face: the lack of accessible and reliable information on hiking trails, landmarks, and other natural attractions. Many people who want to explore Hungary's landscapes may struggle to find relevant details that would help them plan their trips.
This website provides a comprehensive database of over 1,600 landmarks, 604 cycling routes, hiking and water trails, and 270 tourist accommodations. It offers detailed descriptions, photos, and GPX files for hiking routes, which guide visitors through Hungary's most beautiful natural and cultural sites. GPS files and trail recommendations helps hikers navigate easily and safely.
It also provides useful supplementary information such as train timetables, packing lists, and other resources for outdoor activities. The platform is also active on social media-FB and YouTube, where it shares regular updates, videos, and personal hiking experiences. Aktív Kalandor promotes a sense of community too.
Preliminary beneficiaries are hikers and nature tourists. Local communities and businesses, such as accommodations, restaurants, transport benefit from increased number of tourists. Environmental organizations can promote here sustainable tourism and raise awareness about nature conservation. The wider tourism industry, benefits from the increased visibility and promotion of outdoor tourism in Hungary
Resources needed
At launch, a staff of 8: 4 professional content creator , a social media manager , a photo/videographer and 2 project managers.
The tourism marketplace (bookable tourist houses and other services), plus 3 people and plus 2 video content producers.
The entire development cost was cca 111.700 eur.
Evidence of success
Since the launch in 2024 July, we reached almost 6000 registered members who can make bucket list on our site. Those members gave us the opportunity, to launch gamification system, and other campaigns, which encourage them to engage in further activities. Since 2024 July our Facebook reach was 1 079 000 / month average. The aktivkalandor.hu had more than 80 000 webpage views / month average
Potential for learning or transfer
The Aktív Kalandor platform is a potentially valuable practice for other regions to learn from. The relatively low cost of developing the platform itself makes it an attractive model. A critical success factor has been the development of strong partnerships with local tourism organizations. These partnerships ensure that the platform is continuously updated particularly regarding tourist sites, events, and services.
The transfer to other country or region with similar tourism needs might demonstrate how easily the platform can be adapted to different linguistic or cultural contexts.
