DIGICALL - help to implement digital solutions

About this good practice
The practice addresses the challenge of digital transformation for SMEs, focusing on closing the innovation gap between Austria and Hungary within the Interreg V-A Austria-Hungary Cooperation Programme 2014-2022.It is a classic example for cross-border knowledge exchange where partners were able to utilize each other strengths and ease the weaknesses.
An open call – DIGICALL - for establishing the pilot project was carried out within the activities of IMPROVE! project. The purpose of the open call was to implement innovative solutions into SME's life by testing a cross-regional service scheme that supports digital transition of the cross-border region leveraging the expertise and resources of cross-border digital innovation hubs.
In total, 5 SMEs were supported by PBN. One of the company - Leisure Master Kft. - wanted to develop an innovative hygiene device that makes drinking from aluminum cans safer for health reasons and makes them resealable. Activities carried out by PBN were 3D modeling, definition of the proper material composition (silicon) and colouring, molding 100 caps, 3D printing while the Austrian partners (Profactor, Forschung Burgenland) implemented the 3D inkjet printing and an emotion measurement with GSR and Facial Expression Analysis.
Resources needed
• Financial resources: CBC funding under the Interreg V-A Austria-Hungary Cooperation Programme.
• Human resources: 568 engineering hours from PBN.
Evidence of success
The completion of the pilot project represented a significant milestone in the company's journey, providing a tangible and viable product model ready for further development and market introduction. Based on the prototype, the company is ready to prepare the cap for mass production in case the owner finds the right customer. This transition from prototype to potential mass production underscores the project's success in establishing a functional and market-ready solution.
Potential for learning or transfer
Implementing such an SME development project contributes to the economic growth of the region by empowering these businesses to be more competitive in the global market through technological advancements.
The development and execution of such innovative projects require specialized skills, contributing to the skill development of the local workforce. The example of cross-border knowledge exchange supported by CBC fund is transferable for other neighbouring regions, where the innovation level of the 2 areas is different. Regarding the development level regions from good performers and regions from moderate or lagging innovators could set up a team for common development where one side the knowledge is available and other side there is a market demand for a new innovative product.
After checking the available CBC funds, setting up such a pilot initiative and implement it is transferable in the whole IE Program area.
