About this good practice
Check Point ™ is a tele-monitoring platform for remote sensing, diagnosis, emergency response and clinical trials. It is developed for real time patient vital signs observation, regardless of location of the patient. Apart for ensuring 24/7 real time monitoring, it is an intelligent analysis system for the early detection of diseases and abnormal events. It includes monitoring equipment, servers, software and smartphone applications and plications for emergency help system. It consists of a smart wearable physiological monitor, communication device with application and cloud service for storing and displaying the data with medical staff service command centre for evaluation, diagnostics and emergency reaction. This system is developed in order to allow the medical professionals and the patient to supply and receive professional healthcare service not only in designated time and office, but anywhere and at any time. Remote realtime streaming and full data memorization are in use. The solution is used in different hospitals, rehabilitation institutions, GP’s, and private patients, home based care givers. It has been used for evaluation of chronic patients conditions in joint program with Bulgarian Red Cross and proved its clinical potential to detect clinical conditions to the patients which are missed in the usual medical checks. It proved also its efficiency to detect and evaluate the medication plan of the patients and to react on urgent medical conditions of the patients.
Resources needed
An approximate evaluation of the funding needed for a center servicing up to 100 000 patients is 300 000 EUR. Phase 1 includes a call center creation and pilots for less than 20 000, and Phase 2 - monitoring center for up to 100 000 patients for year - 280 000 EUR.
Evidence of success
Checkpoint Cardio system has been certified by CE and FDA. It ensured 24/7 observation for more than 36 000 patients, 3000 simultaneously observed daily. Non-registered clinical conditions have been registered in up to 80% of patients observed, which brought to urgent hospitalization or to therapy change. The final impact indicator is the decrease of cardiac premature mortality rate, decreasing the healthcare cost, hospitals readmissions and improved health access to medical services for all.
Potential for learning or transfer
The system is fully transferable, as it is operated fully online and even the medical service is independent from the location of the medical specialists. The main core are the wearable devices and the software platform which is in cloud. The system serves with raw data the all cycle of patients' observation - in and out of hospital, in risky or remote areas, in the sea. In areas where more patients must be observed with limited financial and expert capacities - in mountains, rural, remote areas, the practice is suitable for public authorities - owners of hospitals or responsible for the delivery of social care services as the system ensures observation of all important vital characteristics, diagnostic and prediction information for the patients on 24/7 base very effectively and efficiently. It allows simultaneous observation of up to 200 patients by 1 doctor and 2 nurses regardless of their physical location. In small villages devices can be distributed even by non-medical personnel.
