About this good practice
Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences Knowledge and Technology Centre (KTC) offers multiple interconnected services for SMEs:
• ViA Smart Labs:
I-LAB (Innovation laboratory), S-LAB (Student Practice Laboratory), B-LAB (Business Trial laboratory) - Service-based approach for usage of RII for SMEs together with multidisciplinary student teams.
The Virtual and augmented reality lab allows the SMEs to use the equipment for:
• Industrial training;
• Augmented reality solutions for Urban planning and architecture.
• Interactive study tools and equipment for medicine and anatomy;
• Visualization solutions for logistics, the integration of RFID technologies and real-time object traceability;
• product 3D demonstration.
Mechatronics and RFID lab provides equipment necessary for development of controlled electromechanical systems, electrical and software prototyping.
Network laboratory offers SMEs to design network solutions and to investigate issues in wireline and wireless networks.
Multimedia laboratory has been developed in close collaboration with the regional television and multimedia company that has enabled a partnership for content creation and equipment sharing
The core objective is the provision of accessibility of ViA infrastructure via cooperation services to partners for carrying out training, applied research or testing.
Usage of laboratories in synergy with the ViA Smart labs process allows companies to utilize RII resources and involve students.

Resources needed
Management, networking, implementation of projects, infrastructure, necessary materials and equipment, implementation of the specialized ViA Smart Lab study courses. Technical laboratory staff (at least one assistant for each laboratory) to assist SMEs in use of the laboratories.
Evidence of success
• Usage of available RII by stakeholders from several fields. Two Augmented and virtual reality hackathons organized, in which new products, services and start-up ideas were produced.
• I-LAB program has facilitated 5 interdisciplinary student teams with partners from industry and public sector that worked on development and testing of partners’ tasks in their premises and in a lab environment.
• Multidisciplinary study course developed, based on I-LAB concept.

Potential for learning or transfer
• Specific technologies and use cases
This practice is interesting from the technical point of view – available RII focused on virtual and augmented reality and the use cases for industry needs.
• Smart Labs approach
The involvement of multi-disciplinary student teams for problem solving for SMEs, using university RIIs is a win-win model for SME’s and university. SMEs can attract students as a cost-efficient solution, and students receive an opportunity to work on a real industry needs.
• Technology transfer
The transfer potential of the Smart Labs approach can be rated as Rather high. The concept does not require extensive investments. Investments in RII can enable students and SMEs to create innovative solutions.
The transfer potential of the other laboratory practices can be rated as High but with limitations. The concept itself is fairly easy to transfer, but the specific laboratories (VR/AR, Mechatronics, Network) require expertise and know-how.
