The V-Bike Story - Public Bike System of Veszprém

About this good practice
Sustainable mobility is one of the key issues and challenges for Veszprém. The construction of bicycle paths to connect the commuter’s area and Veszprem were huge developments and investments between 2018-2022. A total of 45 km of regional cycle paths were constructed of which 14 km lays within the administrative boundaries of Veszprém. The new chapter started in July 2023 (planning since 2021) with the newly implemented environmentally friendly initiative, the V-Bike that combines the freedom of individual transport with the reliability of fixed-track transport. The V-Bike system is one of the first public bike systems in Hungary where every bike has electric assistance (knowing Veszprem’s hilly geography, it is needed). The system was established with 10 public bike stations, a total of 150 docking stations, and 100 uniquely designed, electric-assisted (pedelec) public bikes. Within a year, the system expanded with an additional 7 stations, 6 bikes, and 96 docking stations and there is further development in plans based on the needs of public. V-Bike aims to reduce air pollution, traffic congestion and noise in the city by getting more people to use bicycles as part of their daily lives. The design of bikes allows to be used by wide target group (14+), with the passes the pricing is friendly, website and app are in use for hiring, it’s very convenient.

Evidence of success

• over 30 thousand rentals (total 30,869)
• in the second half of the year the average number of rentals per day exceeded 125 (126,33).
• cooperation with market players (The Veszprém plant of the Continental group, the largest employer in the region, joined the V-Bike system financing the bike station to provide emolyees with a convenient and environment-friendly alternative for daily commuting)
Potential for learning or transfer
• Electric public bikes are smart, cost effective and environment-friendly transport opportunity in the cities even with hilly layout
