Urban Development Concept of Graz (including the concept "Green Net of Graz")

About this good practice
Expert opinion
The effects of climate change are becoming increasingly visible in the urban environment. Green infrastructure (GI) can make cities more resilient to extreme weather events, control pollution, act as flood prevention measure. It supports biodiversity, pollinators, carbon sequestration, flood protection and protection against excessive heat. Moreover, GI positively impacts human health and wellbeing. Green infrastructure is an important element in fulfilling EU legislation, especially the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030 and the Climate Adaptation Strategy. This practice is an example of successful integratio of green infrastructure into strategic spatial planning process. The initiative demonstrated positive results such as the growing number of green roofs. The good practice can be inspiring and useful for other public bodies interested to incorporate GI solutions in spatial planning and raise awareness about multiple benefits of GI.
