TUMO

About this good practice
The TUMO project is an international initiative providing free digital
and creative education, fostering skills in programming, robotics, graphic design, music, animation, photography, filmmaking and game development. In Portugal it aims to bridge the digital divide, promote educational and social equity, and prepare youth for future challenges through a personalized, project-based learning approach. TUMO’s center in Coimbra is the first TUMO center in Portugal and opened in September 2023 with a capacity to serve 1,500 students weekly, providing access to a rich STEAM curriculum in an inclusive environment.
The TUMO project addresses the digital skills gap and educational disparities by offering an accessible, inclusive program for youth development in creative technologies. Implemented through selfpaced learning on the TUMO Path platform and specialized workshops, TUMO combines technology and creativity education with social engagement. The program includes tailored support through learning coaches and workshop leaders. Main stakeholders include Associação Topsail, various private and public donors, and educational bodies, while beneficiaries are the young people who gain critical skills for the digital age and future job market readiness.
Resources needed
The total funding required for the project is €7M for the first 5 years, with multi-year support from private foundations and public entities for staffing, facilities, and operations.
Evidence of success
TUMO’s model has successfully impacted over 60,000 students globally, with proven improvements in digital skills, career readiness, and social awareness. Evaluation shows TUMO students excel academically and socially, with high satisfaction rates and increased employability in creative and technological fields.
Potential for learning or transfer
The TUMO educational model holds strong potential for learning and transfer to other regions due to its innovative, student-centered approach to creative technology education. TUMO combines self-learning with project-based workshops, empowering teens to explore and master diverse areas such as animation, programming, game design, music, and more — all at their own pace.
The case of TUMO Coimbra is especially relevant for regions interested in urban regeneration through education and culture. Located in a restored historical post office building in the heart of the city, TUMO Coimbra is helping to revitalize the city center, bringing young people and families back into a previously underused heritage site. By combining cutting-edge digital education with the preservation and reuse of cultural heritage, TUMO offers a unique and replicable model for connecting youth innovation with historical identity.
