Sustainable Urban Logistics: Rimini's Plan for Greener Deliveries

About this good practice
Committed to reduce congestion and pollution of the region, and understanding the growing pace of the last-mile deliveries, Rimini Municipality defined and approved the Sustainable Urban Logistics Plan (SULP) and is putting into action the strategy to improve the logistics operations. Aligning business profitability with societal and environmental goals can be challenging, but SULPaims to identify optimal solutions and interventions for managing last-mile logistics in the seaside tourist area in a more sustainable way. The plan includes: identification of hotspot areas ;
• survey and analysis of the goods reception needs of economic tourism operators (establishments seaside resorts, accommodation facilities, commercial activities, restaurants/bars, food and drink providers) in terms of quantity of goods and delivery methods;
• analysis of the relationship between demand for goods and supply (in terms of regulation of delivery activities and distribution of stalls for loading/unloading);
• analysis of best practices implemented in contexts similar to those of the study;
• identification, analysis and technical feasibility of interventions and actions.;
Beneficiaries include both residents and tourists, due to a more sustainable strategy for improving the region. FUA collaborated with the mobility office of the Emilia Romagna Region (NUTS-2, ITH5) to collect data on CO2 emissions, urban mobility, cycling mobility and public transport, as well as the Province of Rimini
Resources needed
Thanks to Ministerial funds (total amount €.24.280,00) the Municipality of Rimini could afford the redaction of SULP . At present time SULP in Rimini is only adopted but not in activity for this reason no data are available.
Evidence of success
The collaborative model for cycle-logistics, involving operators, customers, and platform managers, can promote an efficient framework for sustainable goods transport and last-mile delivery. 1High Focus: SULP has already garnered participation from several key stakeholders, including logistics operators and businesses interested in adopting sustainable delivery methods.
This interest reflects a willingness to embrace change and explore eco-friendly last-mile alternatives within the community
Potential for learning or transfer
SULP can serve as a positive influence and model for the 25 other municipalities within the FUA area (Province of Rimini). This initiative is transferable across the entire territory and other European regions. A key lesson learned from SULP's conception and implementation is the potential for significant change in goods delivery habits. This successful demonstration of sustainable last-mile logistics can inspire other regions.The operational model demonstrates its potential for replication and scalability. As awareness grows and more stakeholders recognize the benefits of cycle-logistics, this approach can be expanded to other areas and industries, contributing to a wider positive impact on the region's environmental footprint
