RWM – A network for empowering Romanian women mathematicians and promoting mathematics among girls

About this good practice
The RWM network was created at the end of 2020 by a team of six women mathematicians as part of the European Women in Mathematics (EWM) - an international association of women in mathematics in Europe.
The aim of RWM is to bring together as many Romanian women mathematicians as possible and provide them a mean to keep in touch, to support each other, to exchange ideas regarding topics of common interest.
RWM works towards: Supporting women mathematicians in their careers; Encouraging women to study mathematics, striving to achieve a more diverse and welcoming community of mathematicians; Giving visibility to women mathematicians; Promoting scientific communication; Providing a meeting place for like-minded people; Raising awareness about gender issues in mathematics, advocating for positive change and promoting relevant best practices; Cooperating with groups and organisations with similar goals.
Activities developed within RWM: organizing the monthly seminar “Mathematics and Life”, open talks, debates and seminars (presenting success stories of Romanian women mathematicians, digital tools in superior mathematics, fighting gender gap, and challenges for teaching mathematics online), celebrating Women in Mathematics Day in Romania, attending relevant international conferences in mathematics.
Beneficiaries: women in mathematics, students, teachers, professionals, and experts.
Resources needed
The Romanian Women in Mathematics network relies on a dedicated group of human resources who established the network and oversee its daily operations. These women bring expertise, and commitment to advancing the organization’s mission.
Evidence of success
In 4 years of activity, RWM reached 49 members - women mathematicians from 24 academic institutions, 22 from Romania and 2 from abroad. Dedicated to promoting mathematics and advancing the role of women in this field, RWM has organized a diverse array of events, such as round tables, conferences, and seminars. These initiatives fostered collaboration, addressed common challenges, exchanged knowledge, and built a strong support network in mathematics.
Potential for learning or transfer
The creation of the Romanian Women in Mathematics (RWM) marked a significant step forward in advancing the principles, initiatives, and programs championed by the European Women in Mathematics. This alignment not only strengthens the presence of women in mathematics within Romania but also enhances collaboration and consistency across the European community.
By providing a platform for presentations and discussions on topics of shared interest in the field of mathematics, the RWM network has become a cornerstone for enhancing the visibility and influence of women mathematicians, while inspiring the next generation of scholars.
The activity of RWM is designed around clearly defined and flexible directions for promoting gender equity in mathematics and STEM fields that can be easily tailored to suit the needs and contexts of different countries.
