Pond creation/restoration program for farmers

About this good practice
The practice involves creating a strategy to maximize benefits for farmers and landowners by establishing water bodies:
- Creating of even small water bodies enable water storage and management, and foster rapid development of environments hosting valuable biological groups.
- Restoring water bodies enhances the capacity of existing ponds to support local biodiversity.
The target group includes farmers and landowners aiming to boost biodiversity on their land but lacking the biological expertise to optimize arrangements, as well as operators unsure about project setup and funding utilization.
This good practice stands out by offering both biological know-how for landscaping and turnkey project setup ease. Beneficiaries avoid technical or financial burdens, as the Natagora operator handles these aspects. This “ready-to-use” approach removes obstacles and reduces reluctance among farmers.
Additionally, the strategy provides ongoing support and guidance throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring sustainable and effective solutions. Regular monitoring and evaluation assess biodiversity impact and make necessary adjustments. This holistic approach not only enhances the land's ecological value but also empowers farmers and landowners with the knowledge and confidence to maintain and expand their biodiversity initiatives.
Resources needed
- Scientific: Knowledge of biological groups and their ecological needs.
- Technical: Site management involving contractors.
- Project Management: Communication, execution, and monitoring.
- Financial: Funding from the Walloon Rural Development Programme (ERDF co-financing).
Evidence of success
The dynamics of this project have reversed. Initially, a communication campaign aimed at raising awareness among the target audience was launched. Now, managers must select the most realistic projects from the numerous applications received.
Up to now, more than 250 ponds dug at 90 farmers sites, i.e. approx. 46,000 m² of restored ponds.

Potential for learning or transfer
The potential for transferring a pond creation program managed by an external operator is significant. This approach simplifies implementation for farmers and landowners by providing comprehensive support, including biological expertise and project management. By reducing technical and financial barriers, the program encourages broader participation and effective biodiversity conservation.
The program also strengthens the capacities of beneficiaries by offering continuous support and guidance throughout the project lifecycle. This ensures that the solutions implemented are sustainable and effective. The holistic approach enhances the ecological value of the land and empowers farmers and landowners with the knowledge and confidence to maintain and expand their biodiversity initiatives. This model can be successfully adapted to different regions, promoting widespread adoption of biodiversity conservation practices.
