Dgital enhancement in the Autumn labyrinth cave

About this good practice
The Herbstlabyrinth cave system in Breitscheid is a remarkable underground landscape, combining natural beauty with modern technology to enhance accessibility, education, and tourism.
A custom, manually controlled lighting system optimizes visibility while protecting the cave fauna. This system ensures that the lighting intensity is carefully regulated to avoid disturbing the natural habitat.
Live-streaming capabilities allow events such as weddings to be shared beyond the cave. This is particularly important for those who cannot physically access the cave due to mobility issues, as well as for guests who may choose not to descend into the cave or for whom space is limited. These live streams reduce barriers to participation, allowing people to enjoy the event from outside the cave.
A state-of-the-art 3D film enables virtual exploration of otherwise inaccessible sections of the cave, showcasing its unique features and providing a comprehensive view of its geology, formations, and hidden wonders. This film enhances the experience for those with limited mobility and offers a broader understanding of the cave’s full extent.
Supported by the LEADER strategy, these innovations align with regional tourism goals, strengthening sustainable tourism and enhancing participation. By integrating smart technologies, the Herbstlabyrinth not only preserves its fragile ecosystem but also expands its reach, offering an interactive and inclusive experience for a diverse audience.
Resources needed
For the operation of the tourist cave, including access and guided tours, regular resources are available.
The production of the 3D film was supported by funding of approximately €15,289, with a total investment volume of around €27,000.
Evidence of success
The 3D film is regularly shown despite evolving 3D technology, demonstrating its continued relevance. The opportunity to host events has been utilized multiple times, and improved lighting enhances the quality of these events.
Potential for learning or transfer
The project provides valuable learning potential, particularly in how digital approaches can enhance the appreciation of regional culture and unique local features. The specialized cave lighting system is transferable to other caves, improving visitor experiences while preserving the natural environment. Furthermore, the project highlights the importance of participation and events as key assets, demonstrating how engagement strategies can strengthen local identity and cultural heritage. These insights offer a transferable model for other sites seeking to balance digital innovation with cultural and environmental sustainability.
