Dashboard for analysis and visualisation of data from the regional transport model of Emilia-Romagna

About this good practice
The need to implement this GP arose from public entities' demand for information on people's movements and modal choices within a specific territory (municipalities, unions of municipalities, metropolitan cities) in a simple and fast manner. This is due to municipalities' significant need for more up-to-date data to describe the mobility system adequately. This request is directly linked to the drafting of SUMPs (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans), where the description of the existing situation must detail the current state of the transportation system. Traditionally, this process required municipalities to make specific data access requests from the regional transport model or conduct complex analyses using the Italian Statistics – ISTAT - commuting matrix.
The GP achieved its goals by providing data on movements and modal choices through the created dashboard, with the selection of specific parameters for identifying the target territories. The implementation of the GP was made possible thanks to the presence of an IT team that designed and built the dashboard.
The main stakeholders and beneficiaries of this GP are public entities, particularly municipalities and unions of municipalities. At the same time, private companies can also use this information for traffic studies and accessibility analyses.
Resources needed
he GP for its implementation requires an IT team that, by interfacing with the transport model, can extract the data and build the elements of the Dashboard. This team can be internal to the Region (public) or belong to a private company. The expected minimum cost will exceed 10,000 euros.
Evidence of success
This GP can be considered successful as it has been used by public entities responsible for drafting SUMP (Municipalities or Metropolitan Cities) to prepare the transport overview of the area covered by the Plan. In addition to supporting SUMP, the GP provides valuable assistance for the preparation of traffic studies, accessibility analyses, and analyses of people’s movements.
Potential for learning or transfer
Despite the fact that transport planning varies significantly across European countries, the creation of the Dashboard provides a series of important insights into population movements and mode of transport choices, which can also be utilized in sectors beyond transportation.
