Art and crafts fair in Haskovo

About this good practice
As the crafts are not regulated profession, often times they are the only choice of people who are long term unemployed, elderly, who raise children with disabilities or have disabilities themselves and are unable to enter the job market.
Opening an online shop or physical retail location would otherwise be cost prohibitive for a lot of the enterprises who participate in the fairs.
Throughout the years we’ve seen skilled woodworkers, steel and metalworkers, jewellers, crocheters, felters, potters, tailors and seamstresses, painters, portraitist, artists who carve intricate artwork on wood, weavers, puppet creators, masters who create traditional brass bells and various other arts.
Needs addressed & Objectives: People who are unable to enter the job market or find it difficult to open their own enterprise find an opportunity at the Art and craft fair to sell their products and build their name.
A challenge we take upon ourselves is to ensure better marketing for the fair and more emphasis on the social aspect of it.
Main stakeholders and beneficiaries: Haskovo municipality, Haskovo Regional chamber of crafts, independent artisans, various organizations, the society as a whole
Traditional Bulgarian crafts are kept alive through the efforts of these artisans.
Resources needed
The municipality provides the cottages, land and infrastructure needed to organize the event free of charge. Other than that, the event gathers private and corporate sponsors and benefactors.
Evidence of success
Although we do not receive information on how much each individual independent artisan gained through the fair, we can be sure of the success of the event considering how quickly the cottages are reserved each time and the popularity of the fair amongst the citizens.
Potential for learning or transfer
Keeping the traditions and crafts alive while helping talented local craftsmen and artisans achieve their goals is a win-win for any region. This project is not large in terms of investment, but brings a lot of value back.
