About this good practice
The proposed solution is an innovative technology within the building industry, insulation materials, construction chemistry, sealing materials. A simple manufacturing method and the possibility to use the widely available substrates is what distinguish this solution.
Foamglass is an ecological, non-frammable material characterized by low thermal conduction. Silica and specific amphorus matrix are used as manufacturing materials. Foaming is carried out in moulds in the temperature lower than 500 C (thermal foaming) by means of microwave radiation (microware foaming) or electric current (the so called electrofoaming). This allows for many different applications of the foamglass as depending on the manufacturing method its chemical and physical parameters may be controlled.

Resources needed
The cost of obtaining 1 m3 of foamglass ranges from PLN 200 to PLN 500 depending on the type of materials used to manufacture it and the expected thermo isulation qualities. The market price of other insulating products ranges from about PLN 80 (foamed polystyrene) and PLN 500 (polyurethane foam).
Evidence of success
The technology was awarded with two gold medals at Brussels Innova trade fair. It was also awarded in Polish Product of the Future competition.
The intellectual property covers 4 patent applications, including 2 patents and 1 application in PCT mode. The technology was developed during research conducted at the Włodzimierz Trzebiatowski Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research PAS, but the rights to every patent application related to it belong to the spin-off company: IPANTERM.

Potential for learning or transfer
Market benefits of applying the technology:
● Waste material may be used to manufacture foamglass, which means it helps to recycle various.
● Industrial waste deposits. Waste processed into the foamglass does not have a negative impact on human health and the natural environment. It is not biodegradable and it does not emit any compounds harmful to the health what is important in case of combustion of organic insulators.
● Only non-organic materials are used to manufacture foamglass – it does not contain any harmful substances emitted as toxic gases during use or suddenly during fire.
● Thanks to the thermo insulating qualities of the foeamglass, when used to build houses or as a construction or insulation material it decreases the loss of heat, reducting financial and ecological costs of heating and as a result leads to the reduction of emission of CO2.
