It was chosen to be complemented with an ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) system. The investment in the ORC system has assisted Affärsverken Karlskrona to produce more renewable green electricity.

The plant now has autonomous electricity production through the ORC system, simultaneously contributing to reducing the local electricity grid's load.

Technology has transformed the Gullberna heat plant into a cogeneration producer, contributing to a greener and less weather-dependent (wind and solar) energy system. The boiler is fueled with wood chips from the surrounding forests of Karlskrona, emitting clean combustion gases.

This solution is ideal for smaller heat plants, common in Sweden. While they may not generate as much electricity for the grid, they allow facilities to become self-sufficient, which is the goal of the Gullberna investment.

An automated ORC system with a maximum electricity production capacity of 355 kW has been installed. The ORC system facilitates electricity generation from the hot water in the boiler. It is estimated that the system will annually produce a total of 1330 MWh, equivalent to replacing 1200 tons of CO2 emissions from coal-derived electricity.
