Project summary
On the interface between Agriculture and the Building sector lies a major part of the Climate solution. Agro Building Carbon (ABC) aims to strengthen regional policies supporting the CO2 uptake (‘removal’ or sequestration) with construction crops like straw and bamboo through their processing and use in bio-based buildings.
Current EU-climate strategies and regulations already require an increased sequestration of carbon in all sectors, which especially can be achieved through nature-based solutions. In all countries this especially affects agriculture and building, as carbon storage in soil, plants and building materials play a key role in climate mitigation.
Both the construction and agricultural sectors, who play a key role in all regional development programmes and therefore policies, now require clearer policies and their improvement on all levels, to support innovation and to find additional sources of income. To this consent, nine regional partners in six Member States (NL, LV, RO, SI, IT, GR) and one EU candidate country (AL), together with some associated and/or national authorities and a (consortium-linked) discovery partner from EU candidate UKR, will work on improving (mainly regional) policy instruments in this field.
An important policy tool improvement element is the certification. Existing good practices will be exchanged, helping partner and other (future) Member States enabling certification and improved usability of the tool as such.
This will include improving (regional) policies towards aligning to both the Green Deal and the future EU CRCF (Carbon Removal Certification Framework). Key focus within the project therefore is adjusting and improving policies and instruments, and funding programmes to facilitate improved carbon storage in the building sector. The policy instruments include regional visions and strategies towards climate, rural development and circular economy.
