Energy for the People, by the People!

On 4 December 2024, the Policy Learning Platform hosted a dynamic workshop at the Budapest Congress Center focused on Energy Communities and the incentives available to support local populations in this transition.
The event featured a notable contribution from the SIreNERGY project, proudly represented by Leire Arrizabalaga Aranbarri (Leartibai Fundazioa) and Iñigo Sagasti Zabala (Energiaren Euskal Erakundea / Ente Vasco de la Energía). Our partners shared the inspiring story of the Ekiola Energy Community from the Basque Country, offering a compelling example of how local communities can take charge of their renewable energy future.
The workshop underscored the transformative power of energy communities. These initiatives enable local populations to generate, use, and manage renewable energy, leading to greater sustainability, reduced energy costs, and new job opportunities. Participants delved into the various forms of support available from the European Union to foster the growth of energy communities, including financing, technical assistance, and knowledge exchange through programs like LIFE, Horizon Europe, and the European Regional Development Fund.
With around 70 engaged participants in attendance, the event provided a rich platform for dialogue and knowledge-sharing. Discussions centered on how citizens and stakeholders can play a leading role in the early stages of energy community development. Participants exchanged practical strategies to raise awareness, inspire collective action, and build strong partnerships to ensure the long-term success of these initiatives.
Energy communities represent a crucial step toward a more sustainable and resilient energy system. By empowering people to shape their own renewable energy future, these communities reduce emissions, support local development, create jobs, lower energy costs, and strengthen community bonds.
