Project summary
Europe's metropolitan areas are economic and social powerhouses, generating 51% of the EU GDP and hosting three-fifths of its population. However, fragmented governance and the dispersion of powers among various local and regional authorities hinder balanced development and the effective administration of the diverse metropolitan territory. In particular, effective collaboration between core cities and their surrounding areas remains a challenge, often restricted to specific sectors, limiting the broader metropolitan potential. This underscores the urgent need for tailored frameworks and cooperation models.
To address these issues, the Metro Case project brings together a robust consortium of eight metropolitan areas from across Europe and candidate countries. Their aim is to enhance metropolitan strategic planning policies and tools as to improve multi-sectoral and multi-level coordination between core cities and their hinterlands. By developing a common vision for metropolitan governance, identifying appropriate forms and themes of cooperation, and refining existing strategic planning tools through the exchange of best practices and mutual learning, the project aims to support more effective action programming and targeted expenditure. This will promote comprehensive, integrated territorial development, addressing the diverse needs of all areas within metropolitan regions.
Through this collaborative effort, Metro Case aspires to unlock the full potential of Europe's metropolitan areas, fostering sustainable, balanced, and integrated development.
