Second Interregional Event in Breda

On April 1–2, 2025, project partners of JEWELS TOUR – Jewish Cultural Heritage for Local Sustainable Tourism met in Breda (The Netherlands) for the second interregional event, hosted by the Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUAS).

The first day featured a collaborative reporting session where partners shared the progress of local stakeholder engagement activities developed as part of the project's collective research. The updates revealed a wide variety of approaches across cities—from co-creation workshops and exploratory urban walks to one-on-one meetings, academic collaborations, and the development of innovative digital tools. Common themes included the need to go beyond theoretical frameworks, to strengthen connections with local communities, and to define new, inclusive narratives around Jewish cultural heritage.

A standout moment was the immersive Storytelling Field Activity in Antwerp’s Orthodox Jewish neighborhood. Led by BUAS team members portraying fictional but historically inspired characters, this creative exploration demonstrated the power of storytelling to make cultural heritage more accessible and emotionally resonant. Participants reflected on the experience the following day, discussing key elements for impactful narrative-based tourism.

Key takeaways included:

  • Fictional storytelling must remain grounded in historical truth.
  • Inviting personal reflection fosters deeper visitor connection.
  • Universal values enhance inclusivity and relatability.

The second day also included project management and communication sessions. Partners discussed activity reporting, upcoming events, and strategies for dissemination. A dedicated workshop on Communication in Challenging Contexts sparked meaningful dialogue on how to engage audiences and share project results amidst today’s complex political and social landscape.

As the project evolves, the exchange in Breda has strengthened the network’s shared vision—co-designing sustainable tourism strategies rooted in the richness and diversity of Jewish cultural heritage across Europe.
