Challenges and Solutions for Talents in the Podravje Region
Smart specialization strategies provide an effective framework for addressing the brain drain issue positively, as they focus on the competitive advantages present in each region. One key approach to retaining and attracting talent is the development of innovative policies. Crucial to this is the collaboration of all stakeholders—researchers, scientists, entrepreneurs, NGOs, and public administration—working together to develop an ecosystem where innovation significantly contributes to the creation of quality jobs.
Study Visit in Maribor: Presenting National and Local Measures
The study visit was focused on finding concrete solutions for the sustainable attraction and retention of talent in Podravje and exploring the possibility of implementing Slovenian best practices in other partner countries. Participants were introduced to national and regional strategies and measures already in place to better support talent. Discussions included successful case studies that have proven effective in addressing demographic challenges, such as the shortage of skilled workers and the youth outflow from the region.
The study visit presented several best practices aimed at fostering talent attraction and retention. One such initiative is the PONI Podravje Program, which provides a supportive environment for innovative entrepreneurs, offering mentorship and helping develop business ideas. Zois and Ad futura Scholarships play a crucial role in advancing education and research, supporting international mobility, and nurturing the development of young talents. Job Fairs and the Employment Platform are key initiatives that connect job seekers with employers, facilitating easier access to career opportunities. The Smart Specialization Strategy (S5) supports the strategic development of smart specialization and innovation in key sectors, contributing to regional economic growth. The Dr. Aleš Debeljak Program focuses on reintegrating Slovenian researchers who have been abroad, encouraging knowledge exchange. The Factories of the Future initiative is dedicated to the development of high-tech solutions within the industry, while SRIPs (Strategic Research and Innovation Partnerships) foster collaboration between the economy and the academic sector, promoting innovation.
Joint Steps Forward for the Future of Podravje
The exchange of experiences, discussions, and presentations of best practices led to proposals for future actions that will have a long-term impact on the economic development and demographic challenges of Podravje. Looking ahead, improving the region's attractiveness to young and highly educated professionals will be crucial. This can be achieved through better employment opportunities, increased support for research and development, and the promotion of international mobility. The TALENT4S3 project will play a significant role in driving these efforts forward and contributing to the sustainable development of the region.
