Led by prominent figures such as Alderman Mr. Jesse Luijendijk and esteemed guests from Romania and Portugal, the event highlighted Almere's journey from a reclaimed land area to a flourishing hub of innovation and eco-consciousness.

The meeting commenced with a warm welcome from Johan Luisks, setting the stage for an insightful discussion on Almere's unique story and sustainable principles. Paul Mulder, Advisor of International Affairs, eloquently narrated Almere's history and its evolution into a modern, family-oriented city with a strong focus on green living.

Thierry Permentier, Head of Urban Waste Management, then took the floor to present Almere's bold initiatives in waste reduction and resource recovery. With a commitment to reducing incinerated waste per capita and fostering collaboration with EU partners, Almere aims to set new benchmarks in sustainable waste management practices.

Walter Luitwieler, Programme Manager of Green and Healthy City, outlined Almere's comprehensive sustainability agenda, emphasizing collaboration with diverse stakeholders and short-term action plans to achieve tangible results. The Q&A session witnessed lively discussions among Romanian, Portuguese, and local stakeholders, reflecting the global interest in Almere's innovative approach.

The meeting delved deeper into circular strategies for waste management, with Johan Luiks shedding light on Almere's pioneering efforts in recycling and upcycling. From innovative plastic recycling centers to the production of green concrete, Almere's circular economy initiatives exemplify its commitment to environmental stewardship and economic resilience.

Following the meeting, participants embarked on immersive study visits to Almere's recycling centers and upcycle facilities, witnessing firsthand the city's innovative solutions in action. From the Upcycle Center's transformation of waste into new products to the Save Plastic Factory's pioneering technology, Almere's circular revolution offers valuable insights for cities worldwide.
