Engaging Communities – 3rd study visit to Rotterdam

Rotterdam is known for its high proportion of cyclists and its well-developed cycling infrastructure. But the city is also making great strides in the area of pedestrian traffic. The square in front of Rotterdam Central station has recently been extensively redesigned as a pedestrian zone. New urban development areas such as the Rijnhaven area are actively considering pedestrian traffic and are planning spacious areas for recreation and strolling. This year, the heavily trafficked Hofplein traffic circle will be transformed from a pure traffic area into a place with a high quality of stay thanks to lots of greenery and a reduction to two lanes.
Rotterdam is stepping up its efforts to improve conditions for pedestrians as part of the STEP UP project. During the 3rd study visit from March 11 to 14, all project partners and local stakeholders were invited to Rotterdam to exchange experiences. Together, they discussed innovative street design and safe crossings for pedestrians, the compatibility of the needs of cyclists and pedestrians and the importance of walking for health.
The key findings were that public transport and walking are inextricably linked and mutually reinforcing. It is also a fine art to reconcile the needs of all mobility participants. However, pedestrians should always be given the highest priority in planning.
