Pilot project launched for reusable cups at events in Málaga
LIMASAM has launched a pilot initiative in Málaga to implement one of the best practices learned during the core phase of the MINEV project: the use of reusable, recyclable, and returnable cups at public events. The chosen event for this trial is BRUCH ELECTRONIK, an electronic music festival hosting nine concerts between April and September at the Cortijo de Torres Municipal Auditorium.
To ensure the success of the initiative, a collaboration agreement was established between the non-profit foundation For the Best World (FTBW), the event organiser Rainwalker SL (RW), and three municipal bodies: LIMASAM (lead partner of MINEV), Malaga Sports and Events Municipal Society, and the Environmental Sustainability Department of Málaga City Council.
Under this system—already in place at many festivals—attendees will pay a EUR 1 deposit per reusable cup, which can be refunded upon return at a designated booth managed by FTBW. Attendees may also choose to donate their deposit to the foundation.
This initiative not only promotes sustainable event practices but also aims to raise awareness among event organisers about the upcoming legal requirements. Once the new municipal ordinance on public cleanliness and integrated solid waste management is approved, the use of reusable cups will become mandatory where applicable. The ordinance will also introduce incentives: events—whether public or private—that meet sustainable criteria under the "Málaga, Cómo Te Quiero¡?" program will receive a discount on waste collection service fees. These efforts support a shared environmental responsibility and contribute to making Málaga a greener, more sustainable city by minimising waste and fostering a circular economy throughout all event phases—from planning to post-production.
