On the 6th of February, FabCity hosted the DECISO x KARMA event at the Pop-Up Circular Hub in Jupiter (Hamburg). Together, the two projects DECISO (Horizon) and KARMA joined forces to organise a meeting of local stakeholders and promote interactive discussions on circular economy  and cost efficiency in the construction sector.

The event was introduced by Dr. Uta Mense, a trained architect working as head of department at Hamburg’s Building Competence Centre, who led the session. The coordinators of the DECISO and KARMA projects in Hamburg then presented the projects and current progress.

This was followed by the Workshop, the main activity of the event. The aim was to get participants thinking about possible uses for the Klöpperhaus. This historic building dating from 1915, a former shopping centre located right in the centre of Hamburg, is now empty and is set to have a new purpose. The participants were divided into two groups according to their area of expertise: hands-on professionals or planification players. Each group met to brainstorm on one or more possible uses in a circular economy project, taking into account the stakeholders to be mobilised and the municipal funding available for such projects. Although the two groups worked on the same theme, the division enabled complementary cross-sectors perspectives and the subject to be approached from different angles.

The exchanges between the participants, who came from a variety of backgrounds (engineers, architects, politicians, etc.), were particularly enriching. Each group presented its ideas, leading to rich discussions and the exploration of innovative approaches to the re-purposing of old buildings and the promotion of circular economy financing models.

Finally, this local stakeholders event enabled interactions between local players and experts in the field, it paved the way for new collaborations in the implementation of circular solutions in Hamburg and beyond.
